History
Founded in 2001, A123Systems’ proprietary Nanophosphate™ technology is built on a new nanoscale materials initially developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. A123Systems is now one of the world’s leading suppliers of high-power lithium ion batteries designed to deliver a new combination of power, safety and life.

Our breakthrough technology, innovative multinational manufacturing model and experienced executives are providing the power to change the game for today’s Transportation, Electric Grid Services and Portable Power manufacturers.

The staff at A123Systems is made up of technology industry veterans and preeminent scientists from some of the world’s leading battery companies and research institutes. A123Systems is led by David Vieau, and was founded by Dr. Yet-Ming Chiang, Dr. Bart Riley, VP of Research and Development and Ric Fulop, VP of Business Development and Marketing.

For larger projects that require volume manufacturing, we operate state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities in Asia which have the capacity to scale to millions of battery packs per year, and we are currently expanding our manufacturing capacity in the U.S.

Global Offices
We have a multi-cultural employee base with locations in more than 10 different countries. A123’s experienced Asian-based production and supplier management team includes manufacturing engineers, and supplier quality engineers with six sigma training in logistics and operations.

Origin of Our Name
A123Systems owes its name to the Hamaker force constant which is used to calculate the attractive and repulsive forces between particles at nano dimensions, and which begins “A123...”
