A123 Systems Unveils Next-Generation Energy Storage Portfolio at RE+ 2025
Las Vegas, NV — September 8, 2025
A123 Systems today introduced its next-generation energy storage portfolio designed to meet the evolving needs of utility, commercial & industrial (C&I), and microgrid applications. Leading the portfolio is AEnergy™ 5000 (20 ft) and AEnergy™ 850 (5 ft) containerized battery energy storage system (BESS) platforms—engineered specifically for North American project realities, including stringent safety expectations, constrained project sites, and accelerated deployment timelines.
“Energy storage is scaling fast—projects are getting bigger, timelines shorter, and scrutiny higher,” said Manuel Spitzlay, Senior Director of Sales at A123 Systems. “With our AEnergy™ 850 (5 ft) and AEnergy™ 5000 (20 ft) platforms, customers can deploy faster, operate safer, and stay flexible across utility-scale grid assets, resilient microgrids, and high-demand C&I applications—backed by our North America–based team providing hands-on technical support to keep schedules intact and execution on spec.”
Key Highlights of the New Portfolio:
- AEnergy™ 850 (5 ft BESS): Compact, modular design optimized for C&I and microgrid applications, with enhanced thermal management and safety features.
- AEnergy™ 5000 (20 ft BESS): Utility-grade system engineered for large-scale deployments, providing high energy density and streamlined installation for projects with tight timelines.
- North America–Ready: Built to align with stringent safety codes (NFPA 855, UL 9540A) and project delivery realities in the U.S. and Canada.
- Faster Deployment with Local Expertise: Supported by XYZ’s on-the-ground engineering and project delivery team, ensuring speed, reliability, and responsive service.
- Scalable Solutions: Designed to adapt across multi-MWh utility installations and behind-the-meter applications, providing a flexible platform for integrators and project developers.
A123 Systems: Deployment-First, Customer-First
A123 Systems positions its energy storage portfolio around real North American project constraints—prioritizing installation speed, safety, serviceability, and lifecycle economics for developers, EPCs, and asset owners.
Right-sized enclosures: Choose the footprint that fits your site. The AEnergy™ 850 (5 ft, ~836 kWh) targets space-constrained behind-the-meter and C&I sites with a compact, forklift-friendly form factor and front-access service. The AEnergy™ 5000 (20 ft, ~5.0 MWh) provides a factory-integrated container for repeatable utility-scale builds, supporting faster replication across multi-MWh blocks.
Safety by design: Configurations are aligned to North American expectations, including UL 9540A–tested setups, rack-level fire protection, integrated gas detection, and liquid thermal management. Documentation to support AHJ reviews and permitting is structured to streamline safety demonstrations and compliance under standards such as NFPA 855.
Constructability and field efficiency: Standard lift points, separated electrical and battery zones, disciplined cable routing, and service clearances are engineered to reduce on-site labor and minimize change orders. Factory-integrated assemblies and consistent layouts support predictable installation workflows and simplified commissioning.
Open integration and controls: LAN/RS485 and CAN interfaces enable straightforward pairing with preferred PCS and EMS platforms. The integration posture emphasizes interoperability, allowing integrators to maintain established controls architectures while achieving target performance and availability.
Lifecycle value and serviceability: Maintainable architecture, access-friendly layouts, and defined spare-parts pathways are designed to protect uptime and performance over the asset life. Monitoring options and long-term service programs focus on sustaining output, shortening troubleshooting cycles, and preserving ROI beyond the warranty window.
North America delivery support: Engineering and project-delivery resources based in North America provide hands-on technical assistance intended to keep schedules intact and specifications met from pre-construction through commissioning and operations.
Together, these elements present a portfolio oriented to real jobsite conditions—tight footprints, rigorous safety expectations, and compressed schedules—so projects can move from design to energization with fewer surprises and stronger long-term performance.
